The Executioner’s Heart

Il est normal que Charles Bainbridge, inspecteur en chef de Scotland Yard, soit appelé sur les lieux d’un crime, mais il s’agit du troisième meurtre consécutif où la poitrine de la victime a été ouverte et son cœur arraché. Bainbridge soupçonne qu’il y a une raison symbolique à ces vols de cœurs et fait donc appel au spécialiste du surnaturel Sir Maurice Newbury et à son assistante déterminée, Miss Veronica Hobbes.

Malheureusement, ni l’un ni l’autre ne sont en état de prendre l’affaire en main. Veronica est à la recherche d’un moyen d’atténuer les forces mystérieuses qui poursuivent sa famille depuis quelque temps, et Newbury a été engagé par un client privé : Edward, prince de Galles, qui craint que sa mère, la reine d’Angleterre, ne perde son emprise sur la nation.

Cependant, les deux détectives collaborent suffisamment longtemps pour déterminer que les meurtres pourraient être l’œuvre d’un mercenaire connu sous le nom d’Exécuteur. Française, étrangement belle, la chair couverte de tatouages et incrustée de métaux précieux, l’Exécuteur est célèbre dans toute l’Europe, et les légendes remontent à des centaines d’années. Quelque chose la maintient dans une forme de stase vivante, mais son cœur est endommagé, ce qui fait d’elle une coquille vide d’émotions, inexplicablement poussée à collectionner les cœurs de ses victimes comme des trophées.

Qui est la cible de l’Exécuteur, et qui l’a engagée ? Pourquoi Veronica a-t-elle cessé de faire confiance à Bainbridge ? Que veut vraiment le prince de Galles ? Ce ne sont là que quelques-uns des mystères auxquels Newbury et Hobbes seront confrontés sur le chemin de la découverte du secret du Cœur du Bourreau.

It’s normal for Charles Bainbridge, Chief Inspector of Scotland Yard, to be called to the scene of a crime, but this is the third murder in quick succession where the victim’s chest has been cracked open and their heart torn out. Bainbridge suspects there’s a symbolic reason for the stolen hearts, so he sends for supernatural specialist Sir Maurice Newbury and his determined assistant, Miss Veronica Hobbes.

Unfortunately, neither of them are in much shape to take the case. Veronica has been hunting for some way to alleviate the mysterious forces that have been hounding her family of late, and Newbury has been retained by a private client: Edward, Prince of Wales, who’s concerned that his mother, the Queen of England, is losing her grip on the nation.

However, the two detectives pull together long enough to determine that the killings may be the work of a mercenary known as the Executioner. French, uncannily beautiful, her flesh covered in tattoos and inlaid with precious metals, the Executioner is famed throughout Europe, with legends going back for hundreds of years. Something is keeping her in a form of living stasis, but her heart is damaged, leaving her an emotionless shell, inexplicably driven to collect her victims’ hearts as trophies.

Who is the Executioner targeting, and who hired her? Why has Veronica stopped trusting Bainbridge? What does the Prince of Wales really want? These are just some of the mysteries that Newbury and Hobbes will confront on the way to unearthing the secret of the Executioner’s Heart.
